Comment spam

January 26th 2007 20:49
If you are new to blogging, don't be surprised to find that most of the comments left about your blog posts aren't related in any way to what you've written. Indeed, they most likely will be something called comment spam.

This can take on several forms, usually nonsensical comments leading up to a URL for a porn or shopping site. Or, you'll find yourself targeted by one of the Web's oldest spam scams: overseas "investors" asking unsuspecting folks to provide their personal bank account information. Just today, I received the following comment spam on this Orble blog:

From Ms. Gloria Mumah

(gloria_mum05@yahoo.fr)

Dear,
I am introducing my self as Ms. Gloria Mumah, the only Dauther of late Chief and Mrs Jonathan Mumah, I wish to request for your assistance in a financial transaction. I got your contact from a member of this your site, And I wish to invest in Manufacturing and real estate management in your country.

I have USD ($12.200,000) (Twelve Miliion two hundred thousand united states dollars only)to invest in your country, and I will require your assistance in receiving the funds in your personal/company account for investment, I will be gladly to give you 10% of the total sum for your assistance once the money get's to your account in your country.

please it is very important you contact me immediately on my private email (gloria_mum05@yahoo.fr) for further explanation on how we will proceed. Awaiting your immediate response. Thanks and God bless.

Best Regards
Gloria Mumah

It is important that bloggers be vigilant about monitoring for this kind of comment spam. At a minimum it should be removed so that other readers don't wrongly associate you with such scam artists. And, who wants this kind of crap on their site in the first place, providing the opportunity for an unsuspecting reader to be ripped off? When you find such spam, delete it immediately!

Consider it a cardinal rule of blogging: watch carefully the amount and type of comments your site receives. There's a good chance that a spammer is trying to use your hard work to their advantage.

Now, start blogging!

Hi

I am new to blogging ( I've only submitted 2 posts so far) and I think your blog is exactly what I need to read everyday - very encouraging and informative at the same time. So, why can't I find any posts from you since January 2007? Are you coming back?
